Review of New Novel, “Leaves Subsiding”, by M. Yoshida McCurry
M. Yoshida McCurry has written a new novel that is available at all online bookstores, including http://www.amazon.com, http://www.booksonboard.com and http://www.barnesandnoble.com, to name the big ones. This novel, “Leaves Subsiding,” takes its title from the Robert Frost poem, “Nothing Gold Can Stay,” a poem that explores the loss of innocence and youth that we all experience while growing up…
“Leaves Subsiding” is a tale of two twins, the brash narrator and her subject: twin sister Evelyn, an emotional, idealistic and mercurial young woman. The story follows Evelyn through happy and disappointing discoveries while trying to make her way in the world after graduating early from college. She deals with love and loss, in its many forms, and comes to realize that happiness comes from the inside–not from outside experience, but inner understanding.
This novel is written in the style of magic realism, a genre used by many authors, notably Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Lewis Carroll. Magic realism combines reality with mystical experiences to create a novel that is at once plausible and implausible, as characters interact with each other, society and nature in a way that is woven into the fabric of the story.
Xlibris called “Leaves Subsiding” a “beautifully crafted novel [and] a gripping tale by author M.Yoshida McCurry that delves deep into the human psyche and the search for happiness.”
M. Yoshida McCurry is heavily influenced by women writers such as Virginia Woolf and Kate Chopin. Like Chopin, M. Yoshida McCurry sets her story in a familar place–in this case it is Texas, where she has lived for more than 35 years. This kind of narrative is called “local color” because its characters are all set in one place and carry the traits of the larger society that they live in.
Her other influences include Bob Dylan, E, M. Forster, Jane Austen, Jack Kerouac and Zora Neale Hurston. Some of her favorite novels include “The Awakening” by Kate Chopin, “The Voyage Out” by Virginia Woolf, “Dharma Bums” by Jack Kerouac, “Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austen and “There Eyes Were Watching God” by Zora Neale Hurston.
M. Yoshida McCurry is a novelist and poet. She has over fifteen years experience writing for newspapers, non-profit educational companies, magazines, online publications, marketing and advertising agencies and university print divisions. She currently lives in Houston, Texas and runs her own tutoring company.
This new novel is available both online and through the publisher, http://www.xlibris.com, and costs somewhere between $5-25, depending on which bookstore you shop in.
